Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist.

Hand Drawn Animation[]
Regular Animation, or hand drawn animation, was used for a lot of animated films back in Walt Disney's times. Each frame of the figure shows the figure performing a different yet similiar action to the previous frame. Thus creating, a moving image. For example, if you draw a person's hand on the left of a paper, then in the center, then on the right, and play it back repeatedly frame by frame, you will get a person waving there hand. Some go into more detail and use degrees and whatnot. But that's just the basic art of hand drawn animation.
Stop Motion Animation[]
Stop Motion Animation, can be used in many ways. Stop motion animation is using a real life object to show movement. For example, a clay figure can be molded into, as said before, similiar yet different actions. If you take pictures of each of these actions and play them back frame by frame, you'll have yourself a stop motion animated picture!
Computer Animation[]
Computer Animation can be used for 3-D. It can also be 2-D, the point is that the animation is created on a computer.
